Do you want a balance of a friendly sense of community along with some lovely private spaces in a shared home? The Mackenzie Heights Collective has been a cooperative household for over 40 years in the Kitsilano/Dunbar neighbourhood of Vancouver, BC. We have been operating under the same basic principles of shared living since we were established. We share occasional meals, social gatherings, a warm respectful atmosphere, ideas, and laughter. Our household consists of mostly older adults (40+), one college aged housemate and a seeing-eye dog. We come together for dinners and create a warm sense of community through our interactions. Together, we look after our home by sharing household responsibilities.

We are currently looking for someone to join our household and prefer someone who is planning on staying for at least one year. The second floor bedroom in the photos here is available now. Rent will be $900 plus utilities and household expenses which average about $100 per month per person. We also each pay $70 per week for food, which covers our mostly organic meals and snacks. Each member of the community contributes to a couple of shared dinners monthly, and we rotate grocery shopping and household chores. We buy our groceries primarily from local or organic suppliers. Our shared meals can accommodate various eating preferences to respect individual needs, but on the whole we are an omnivorous household. From time to time we host a variety of community gatherings including potlucks, games parties and study groups.

Our large older character home has plenty of common spaces, hardwood floors, a living room with a fireplace, and a great view of the mountains and city. There are many shared spaces in the house that are available to everyone (living room, dining room, ping pong room (doubles as a guest room), kitchen nook and a covered back porch). We have a forest-like front yard which gives us a bit a nature retreat in the big city. Our backyard has vegetable and herb gardens, a patio, a shed/garage, and composting systems. We have excellent, quick bus service on the 2 and 25 bus lines, as well as secure indoor bicycle storage.

We are not just seeking to fill the space, but are looking for someone who will be an active part in making the house a home. We look for people who are:

-Engaged and involved
-Straight-forward communicators
-Socially available and interactive
-In for house dinners more often than not (we designate 2-3 evenings a week for shared dinners)
-Aware of the impact of their actions on others

If you are interested in our place, please send us an email including your past shared living experience, and let us know what is important to you in your next home. We usually conduct a brief phone interview before showing our home to prospective housemates. Please include your phone number in your response so we can reach you as well as list some good times for us to call you (also please include your "real email address" as sometimes the Craigslist generated reply will sometimes otherwise go into a junk box). Ultimately, we are looking for a person who is easy-going, social and communicative, and who would fit well within the current make-up of the household. We are a non-smoking (of all types) household and due to the seeing-eye dog cannot accept any furry pets here.
