Hello Vancouver musician creators! We have put together a small group of 10 musicians for the purposes of fostering peer-to-peer learning. I've been in a business-focused peer group for a while and it made a huge difference in my life. I wanted to replicate the peer group idea with a focus on musicians. The group has been around for a year now, and we all learned a lot.
If you think this could be for you, please read the rest of this ad and get in touch with me via the directions at the bottom. (meaning please don't send me a one-line email saying "yo, I'm in. when do meet?")
Format: Meet once a month for about 3 hours. The day of week and time can be moved to fit as many schedules as possible. The meetings will be in person around the Cambie and King Edward area. The next meeting will be on Thu Jan 15th at 7 pm to 10 pm.
How much does it cost: Free.
The agenda looks like this:
- First part: Each member provides a 5 min update (My current goal as a musician, What I've been working on, where I'm stuck)
- Second part: Roundtable discussion (topics like promotion, gigs, live performance, gear, producing, resources, persistence, other)
- Third part: Share something (Play a recorded song/video or perform a song, give and receive honest, constructive feedback anonymously)
Why participate: We all can learn something from each other. By sharing lessons learned from a group of peers you can overcome challenges much faster than you can by yourself. Chances are that you will build some close connections.
Ideal members: Musicians who are
1. Actively creating new material or actively gigging
2. Open-minded about different styles
3. Willing to learn from others and help others learn
4. Respectful to others
This is not for:
1. People just looking for jam buddies
2. Musicians who don't create and only do covers
3. Anyone with a big ego and/or low emotional intelligence
It doesn't matter if you have played gigs, recorded hit singles, do stuff online, or just create music in the dark in your bedroom. We're looking for a range of progress.
How to join: Reply to this ad with
1. Your name, musician/project name
2. A link to any music that you've created in the past year
3. A line or two about "what are you hoping to get out of the group?"
4. A line or two about "what you would bring to the group (perspectives, experiences, etc)?"
5. An email I can contact you directly with
The selection process can be a bit subjective. The focus is on finding a group of musicians that are likely to get along and learn from each other, rather than matching up a group based on a specific genre. Looking forward to meeting you!
