Hello!

My name is Ilona Beck, director of Music Circles Studio.

I am currently building new Music Circles groups for young musicians. Each group meets weekly at my home studio for a 60 min lesson, to prepare for performances around the city.

Music Circles are for children ages 8-18, who have been playing violin, cello, piano or another instrument for at least a year.

Groups consist of 3-8 students of similar age. One of my particular specialties is being able to tailor music instruction specifically to the needs of individual members within a group situation. Because of my ability to make custom music arrangements, I can help every child in an ensemble to thrive, even when the kids' skill levels are different.

Generally, children prefer to be with kids their own age, and the social aspect of the ensemble is the glue that holds the musicians together as well as motivates them. Kids in a group become very fond of each other, and appreciate being with children that have music practice in common

Growing up in a musical family, I know how important it is for children to have music in their lives. Some of my most cherished memories are of playing music with my family. I strive to create for my students that same love of music and sense of camaraderie with fellow musicians.

I welcome any of the following instruments in my groups...violin, viola, cello, piano, recorder, tin whistle, ukulele, guitar, flute.

I learned fiddle while playing with traditional musicians in pubs across Ireland. I love having a bunch of students playing fiddle, sometimes with a tin whistle player, mandolin or ukulele, with a pianist accompanying Cape Breton style.

Music Circles groups are not for absolute beginners. I can give a child private lessons, though, until they are ready for a group

I have been teaching violin and orchestra for over 25 years. My parents and grandparents were music teachers and I am proud to carry on our family tradition.

My teaching style is Warm, Respectful, Supportive, Nurturing, Accepting, Empowering. I see Music as a powerful force, and I believe that it is one of the most important tools for learning and communicating.

I am happy to answer questions. Be sure to ask me for my Blog address, where there is lots more information and a ton of colourful photos of my Music Circles groups!

Sincerely,

~Ilona Beck

* * * * * * * * * * What Parents Say about Ilona's Teaching * * * * * * * * * * * *

"Ilona is a very caring teacher who often plays along with her students, giving gentle encouragement, steady inspiration, and producing an example of a wonderful sound for the student to emulate. She creates an atmosphere in which students are challenged to think there was no limit to their ability or to what pieces they can play. Ilona also takes a personal interest in each child, which endears her to them." Elly, mom

"Our daughter gives Ilona a rating of 11 on a 10 point scale for excellence in music instruction, and we agree. Ilona makes learning music fun, and more important, she understands how the nine-year-old brain learns. She knows just when to be silly and just when to zero in on a teachable moment. She also understands that music is SOCIAL: kids will welcome music instruction and music practice if other kids are involved. Since she started lessons with Ilona, our daughter has spontaneously included music making in her playdates. It's heartwarming to see the kids pack up the gin rummy game in favour of playing fiddle, cello, and piano. And music making has become a family affair: that's an entirely unexpected bonus." Lin & Art, parents

"She is a very skilled and talented individual who maintains a wonderful rapport with both children and adults alike." Lynn, mom

"Her personality is warm, sincere, and interested in her students' abilities. She brings out the best in them and challenges them to expand. She is pleasant, upbeat, and inspiring toward her students." Graham, father

"Ilona was very gentle and patient, and sensitive to my daughter's needs. Ilona adapts her method to the child's needs, which I feel is a real gift in a teacher. I cannot find enough adjectives to compliment Ilona. She is a gifted musician and teacher who has a variety of skills and a wonderful personality as well." Patti, mom
