Are you looking to join a fun book club? A group that doesn't choose all of the "serious books"? Then maybe our Chick-Lit Book Club might interest you!
I think that "Chick-Lit" often gets a bad rap and I know there must be many ladies out there that love to read, but after a long day at work or with your kids, all you want to do is read fun, kinda "fluffy" books. I'm talking about "Bridget Jones' Diary", Liane Moriarty and JoJo Moyes kind of books. You know what I'm talking about---these books have a great story, but aren't exactly "epic literature". These are books that maybe you didn't read in any English Lit classes, but you love them 'cause they are escapist and funny, upbeat and often totally enthralling.
This is an established group that has been meeting for about 11 years now. There has always been a core membership of about 9 or 10 chicks (in our 30's and 40's) who usually make it out to our meetings, but we have had 3 members move away and lots of people joining but not showing up, so we really want to add some new, committed members. We meet every 4 or 5 weeks to discuss the previous month's book and choose another one. We usually meet in Vancouver at someone's house (but can meet outside of Vancouver if a member lives there) and there is always a lot to eat and drink. We have a ton of fun talking about the book and then usually lots of girl-stuff. Even if a member hasn't had a chance to read the book, we often still come out to the meetings because we have so much fun and lots to talk about.
The three things we ask are: that you bring an appetizer or dessert to each meeting, that you don't bail at the last minute and that you commit to host at least once per year :-)
If you are female, open-minded, easy-going, like to chat about books you've read and might be interested in joining us, email here or search on Facebook (where we post our group) under "Vancouver Chick Lit Book Club" and request to join if you are intrigued. Our platform to communicate is out Facebook page so you will need to have a profile. Looking forward to meeting some new members.
Some of the books we have read are: "Paris Letters" by Janice MacLeod, "The Break" by Marian Keyes as well as "Crazy Rich Asians" by Kevin Kwan. Upcoming are:
June: Educated, by Tara Westover
July: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
August: The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian
September: Becoming, by Michelle Obama
PS I know it is weird to show up at someone's house the first time to a book club full of people you don't know, but that's how we all met so why not go for it!
