The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents the boundless sounds of the Cristina Pato Quartet, April 11, 2019, at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Galician bagpipe master and classical pianist Cristina Pato is a musical force, skillfully playing at the edges of jazz, classical, Latin, and world music. Her strikingly fresh sound is “wild, feral, yet virtuosic and breathtakingly fast” (New York Music Daily), and can be heard in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Silk Road Ensemble. The euphoric musicality and high-energy drama of the quartet is brought to a crescendo in Latina, a 2015 album filled with explorations of Latin music. The electrifying ensemble will take Vancouver audiences on a journey through the musical diaspora of two continents in this concert, starting in Italy before traversing Spain and landing in Latin America. Pato revels in the universal rhythms that connect us.
