We are one of the only facilities in the Pacific NorthWest that buys, sells and restores reel to reel tape decks. We have over 35 years experience working on these units, and have the tools and test equipment to properly align and bring these decks to life. We are reeltoreeltech.com
This is the Revox A700 high end reel to reel tape deck. It was made from 1973 to 1981, and was designed as a high end consumer deck, capable of making incredible sounding tapes. The studio version of this deck was called the Studer B67.
This deck has a ton of features in it, including:
-3 speeds, from 3 3/4 to 15 IPS
-1/2 track tape format (2 track) (we have two other A700s here that are 1/4 track, at $2,000 each)
-exceptionally gentle tape handling
-3 motor direct drive design, with a quartz lock capstan motor
-phono input, and built in 2 channel mixer, so that you could make mix tapes from two sources with the two sets of faders. Revox actually designed this deck to be used as a preamplifier, so you could eliminate a preamp from your stereo, and plug the deck right into a power amp
-long life heads that outlast typical steel heads by Teac and Otari, etc.
-modular head assemblies, so you could switch between 1/4 and 1/2 track heads.
-real time tape counter
We currently have 7 of these A700s in stock, so we decided to run through all of them at the same time. Two became parts decks, as the heads were too far worn to make them worth repairing, but the other 4 along with this one will be for sale shortly. This is one of the nicer, lower hour ones that we have.
We did a ton of work to this deck:
-recapping of all electrolytic capacitors, with name brand caps from Mouser
-replacement of the large trimpots in the deck that are known to go intermittent.
-replacement of the counter belt
-replacement of the 7 Rifa motor caps that are known to explode without warning
-replacement of the mail filter caps on the power supply board.
-calibration to ATR MDS-36 tape, similar to Maxell UDXL and RTM LPR-35 tape.
-replacement of the VU meter bulbs
-cleaned all switches and controls
-test run of the deck for 10 hours to ensure long term reliability.
The deck's frequency response is incredibly flat,. to almost 20Khz at 3 3/4, and to 20Khz+ at 7 1/2 and 15 IPS. The solenoid control transport works flawlessly, and is really gentle on tape, making this a great deck to digitize old tapes with. The deck can also give a nice tape sound if you're going to bounce tracks to and from your DAW. It's also an excellent choice to listen to the high end audiophile tapes that are available.
Cosmetically, the deck is in good shape on the front.
The wood side panels have some marks and scuffs on them, but that's pretty typical for most decks. Both side panels come off with two screws, so they'd be easy to clone if you so desire.
We know how to pack these decks, and it will be double boxed with lots of bubble wrap and styro sheeting.
The deck comes with two Revox clone NAB adapters, a new metal takeup reel, and a new reel of our 2500' RTRTech tape.
