These are from the 40s or 50s. Clearly marked Japan on their bottoms. They are a type of chalk-ware, some say papier maché or even composition. For their age and fragility they are in great shape with very little bumping. However, Joseph has lost his staff over the years and Jesus' manger has one piece ( bottom left) broken off. But these minor things don't really detract from the charm of these old pieces. Mary is 4.25" tall. They sell as a set.
