Offered here is an authentic lost-wax cast bronze bust of Lord Shiva, depicting the deity with his third eye (Trinetra), tripundra forehead markings, and crescent moon in the hair. This example is finely detailed, with the coiled serpent and intricate braiding rendered in deep relief.
This type of bronze head — known in parts of Himachal Pradesh as a mohra — was traditionally used for devotional purposes in homes and smaller shrines, distinct from the larger ritual masks used in temple festivals.
Origin: Likely Himachal Pradesh, India, or Nepal
Material: Bronze (copper-tin alloy)
Method: Cire-perdue (lost-wax casting) with hand finishing
Height: 5 inches (12.7 cm)
Condition: Very good vintage condition; honest wear and natural patina with golden highlights from handling
Estimated Date: Early to mid-20th century (possibly earlier)
The underside reveals the rough interior casting texture characteristic of genuine lost-wax process bronzes. This is not a modern resin reproduction — the weight, surface oxidation, and casting evidence are consistent with period production.
Comparable auction records:
Larger Himachal Pradesh mohra bronzes have sold between $250–$600 USD for mid-20th-century examples, with earlier pieces exceeding $1,000 USD.
Smaller devotional bronzes like this example are rarer on the open market, particularly with complete detailing and undamaged features.
