The Life of Emily Carr - Paula Blanchard (hardcopy) $10
no dustcover
From the internet: Emily Carr was one of Canada's most gifted painters and writers. Born in colonial Victoria, British Colombia, in 1871, she showed an early desire to commit her life to art. Fiercely independent and defiantly individualistic, she was considered an eccentric by the society around her. Working largely in isolation, without the example of strong women artists to look to, and years ahead of the art of her time and place, Carr demolished some traditionally cherished notions about women artists. Out of her travels to remote parts of British Columbia came her paintings of the native villages and their massive, brooding carvings, and her great swirling images of the mighty forests of the Pacific Northwest. Paula Blanchard draws a sympathetic portrait of a living, breathing, very human being that was also a great artist.
