During the early 2000(s), homestay families used to charge $850 monthly for room and board for international students. Now, 20 years later, the cost of housing in Greater Vancouver, utilities, food/groceries, has increased without limits. Plus, inflation has put the value of the Canadian dollar so much lower than it was on those days.
Under these conditions families here have to embrace the budget for our families; but the agencies of international students expect from host families to continue with the same rate of 20 years ago, to host students that as a luxury in their countries, come to enjoy the comfort and education that this country offer. We live in a different kind of living value now in 2019, so it shouldn't be a sacrifice from the hosting families who are the ones that open our homes, families, work and provisions, under the financial conditions of the agencies that use this as a business; while is becoming a challenge for the host families.
Hosting families should check the cost of living for one person in Vancouver, to set up the rates/fees, being more realistic and fairer as we have one more, young person consuming in the house (housing, utilities, food - especially teens and early post-teenagers). If at least we could set up the rates with the equivalence of US$, because in the other side of the border they pay US and the cost of food, gas, housing is much cheaper there.
