It’s a big shared house at the base of Burnaby Mountain near Hastings & Duthie. 6 bedrooms, looking to fill the last of them with an experienced mature adult preferably for long term.
2.5 bathrooms, 1.5 kitchens (dishwasher upstairs, kitchenette downstairs, all shared by all), 2 indoor living rooms, small workshop, big nice backyard with gardening space, 2 covered patio spaces - upstairs in the front, ground floor in the back. Washer and dryer. Upright freezer in upstairs kitchen, second fridge downstairs. Off Street Parking.
Smoke friendly - both kinds (outside only on the covered furnished porches). Alcohol friendly but not a party house.
Very quiet neighborhood - 10 mins walk to Kensington Plaza for shopping, liquor store etc.
Additional street parking right in front of the house. Good transit - 5 min walk to 144 (to SFU or to Sperling Station and eventually Metrotown). Or 5 min walk to R5 Hastings (to SFU or Downtown faster than a car).
No couples or parents with children. Preference given to a mature person 45+ with experience living in shared situations. We can listen to 80s music and complain about our medical issues (ha ha).
The room: Upper floor, 10.5 x 9.5 feet (105 sq. ft.), 4 foot closet. Screened window facing East (view of neighbours house). Damage deposit is an additional ½ of rent. The room is unfurnished but if you really have nothing we can probably help you out temporarily. We are in the process of giving it a fresh coat of paint.
$850 per month includes rent, utilities (and Internet) plus basic household supplies like toilet paper, lightbulbs, cleaning stuff etc. We don’t have Cable TV but it could be discussed. We do have a couple of streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, Amazon).
Current Residents: We’re five clever quiet fun people, 3 men and 2 women, ranging in age from 50 to 70. I’m Steve the principal tenant. I’m a semi-retired graphic designer who does woodwork for fun. Liz who also lives upstairs is a movie costumer on medical leave. Downstairs we have Nick who is a painter/plasterer in the film industry, JP who is a construction Safety Officer originally from LA, and Penny who is retired from running an art gallery. Yes, we joke about it being an Old Folks Home .
We’re a little messy (because we're all part artist) but never filthy. We try harder in the kitchen because some of us are a bit obsessive and will complain if you are a total lazy messy pig. I’m the one who will complain if you’re noisy (I love people who love headphones).
We vote NDP. We don't go to church. We aren’t way into spiritual stuff either. We're omnivores, mostly. We're clever nerds/artists who love books, cooking, crafting and gardening. Weird but not too weird. Fluent English speakers. Very experienced with shared living.
Pets: We have 2 cats and that’s all we can have. So you must like cats but not have any pets.
Stuff and Storage: We have a full kitchen already so most of your kitchen stuff would need to be stored. We have a mostly empty living room upstairs so it would be great if you had some living room furniture.
We have some indoor storage and a fair amount of carport storage but not room for say the entire contents of a 1 bedroom apartment.
Please Don’t:
- Commit if you can’t afford it and aren’t able to pay before you move in.
- Lie about being able to afford it on an ongoing basis.
- Come drunk to the interview (yes, this happened).
- Turn out to be a hoarder with literal tons of stuff.
